take it home | counting beads!

Celebrating Your Race

Word of the Week:  Joyful

Bible Verse:  Thank God no matter what happens.                                         1 Thessalonians 5:18 (paraphrase)

Story:  Paul & Silas in Jail  (Acts 16:22-34)

Prayer:  Lord, please help me to be joyful all the time and to give You thanks every day.  Even when bad things happen, I know that You have a plan, God, and you can make the bad things turn into good.  Help me not to whine and complain when things don’t go my way, but to be thankful and happy for all the blessings You have given me.  I love You, Jesus. Amen

“Take-It-Home” Activities

Children in the Garden, Backyard, and K-Street made Counting Beads today in class.  These are a great way to help children engage in conversation with their parents, so I encourage you to use them at home!  Today, we used them to come up with things for which we are thankful, but they can be used for almost any conversation (see below for conversation starter ideas).  All you need to do is find a central location in your home to keep the beads (I recommend the dining room table), then as your family sits together use the counting beads to help facilitate conversation.  For instance, you could ask your children to think of things for which they are thankful.  As they say each thing, they move one bead from the top down to the bottom, continuing to list things until all the beads are at the bottom.  Each child can use their own counting beads or you can pass one set of beads around the table, working together as a family.  The beads give the children something tactile to help develop their fine motor skills and anytime you can simultaneously pair more than one type of learning style (visual, auditory and kinesthetic) the impact is greater!

Conversation Starters:

How did you share God’s love today?

Where did you see God today?

Who would you like to pray for today?

What makes you happy?

How do you know God loves you?

What do you love about your mom/dad/sibling etc.?

What gifts has God given you?

What are your favorite things God has created?

Hope you have some great conversations with your kids!
